When submitting the marketing assignment, it’s not just about reaching the word count. It’s very easy to lose marks for an assignment not due to the absence of ideas or content, but because of the detail of the content. A quick check can mean gaining those extra marks and showing yourself as the serious thinker you need to be.
The first thing to do is make sure your piece actually answers the question. It’s a common pitfall, especially when taking a marketing course, to get caught up discussing broad theory without referring it back to case study/scenario. Take a look at the prompt again and make sure every part of your piece is working toward the solving of the problem presented.
Secondly, you need to look at your usage of marketing frameworks. Are you using the SWOT, PESTLE, STP, or the 4Ps models in an applied manner or are you just discussing them? Remember, markers are not interested in your discussion of the models but rather your application of the models. Ensure that you are relating each of the models to the brand or industry under consideration.
Thirdly, you need to look at the depth of your research. A good marketing assignment will have a combination of credible sources from the literature and current industry reports. Ensure that your sources are not too old or too general. Also, make sure your referencing is consistent throughout the assignment.
Lastly, you need to look at the structure of your assignment. Is your introduction clear on what you are going to discuss in your assignment? Are your paragraphs well structured and logical in their flow? Are your headings consistent with the marking rubric provided for your assignment? A poor structure may mar even the best ideas.
Another aspect of writing that students sometimes overlook is critical analysis. Do you weigh your choices against one another? Do you point out weaknesses? Marketing is not an either/or situation; considering potential pitfalls, weaknesses, and trade-offs shows higher-order thinking skills.
Finally, be sure to proofread your work. Grammar errors, confusing sentences, and inconsistent use of terms may undermine your professional image. Reading your work out loud or having someone else look over your work may help you catch problems you might not see otherwise.
This is also why some students may use a marketing assignment guidance tool to help them with complex marketing assignments—again, not to replace their work but to ensure their analysis, organization, and critical thinking skills are consistent with what the university requires.
At the end of the day, marketing assignments test more than knowledge — they test application, strategy, and communication. Taking time to double-check these elements before submission can make a measurable difference in performance.
