The Center of Expertise in Traditional Architecture of the Route des Chefferies works around Cameroon’s built heritage through several components: the construction of new cultural and tourist buildings and the identification and restoration of traditional built heritage. He set up a typology of the buildings of the different national groups and sub-groups, which is based on complex and varied parameters such as the types of construction (huts, kitchens, silos, sheepfolds, enclosures, etc.), the materials ( millet, stone, clay, woven basketry panels), ornamental elements, etc. It is a valuable tool for inventory operations, safeguarding built heritage, and rehabilitating dormant heritage. Thus, and since the 1990s, the Association Pays de la Loire-Cameroun (APLC), la Route des Chefferies and its experts carried out diagnoses of the built heritage in more than fifty chiefdoms. In 2018, it also participated in the work on the indicative list presented to UNESCO, and contributed to the inscription of the large traditional huts of the Grassfields.
Finally, specializing in architecture, the Route des Chefferies also designs cultural buildings, as well as their scenographies, which are designed to reflect the richness of Cameroonian heritage. Tourist offices, community museums, national museums… are all constructions made by la Route des Chefferies.
